Caledonian MacBrayne Ferry to Lewis - Ullapool to Stornoway Route

These #photographs were collected on the Caledonian MacBrayne Ferry to Lewis - Ullapool to Stornoway Route on the 2nd of June 2004.

One of the best things about Scotland were the ferries and the ride over to the Island of Lewis and Harris from Ullapool was the first such trip on James' UK/EU adventure in 2004. After this, James' drive down the east coast of Scotland did tend to go places where there was a car ferry!

This large ferry was 2 and a half hours of the quiet joy that comes from floating across the calm water of Scottish Lochs and coastal waters.

The Scottish weather decided to put on a show of sunshine and the blue water sparkled. There were even a few British sun bathers who started their holiday early on the Boat! We've only got photos from the Ullapool to Stornoway trip because James' work/life balance was better in 2004 and he decided to enjoy the ride without a camera lens viewpoint on the way back.

We entirely recommend this journey and we reckon you could have yourself a good little holiday on the beaches of Lewis but you better pack a jumper with your bathers just in case the sun decides to hide.

The Galleries, Above and Below, contain a set of curated camera proofs for narrative context.

James stayed at the The Gearrannan Blackhouse Village and he says "it was a really great experience, very clean and the traditional black house was warm and cosy when the night got cold"!

A unique self-catering holiday accommodation on the Atlantic coast of the Isle of Lewis, close to the Callanish Standing Stones and Carloway Broch.  Open all year.  An ideal location for exploring the Western Isles – scenery, archaeology, environment and wildlife, with opportunities for walking, cycling, fishing, surfing or relaxing.  In season, the village and its living museum are open for visitors and bus tours.

Experience the history and heritage of crofting life.  Enjoy fresh food and home-baking in the cafeteria and buy mementoes in the village shop.  A Scottish island holiday experience that will stay in your memory!
