These are #photographs of Byron Bay & Nimbin in NSW captured in September 2003.
Above, These are 12 colour corrected feature images of Byron Bay and Below is a curated set of camera proofs that include images of the Beach and the hinterland. We've included the unvarnished camera proofs of the country side because there is beauty in the wildness along with snapshots of some very pretty cows!
For travellers heading to Byron Bay from Sydney, catch the inland train to Lismore where you can hire a car to drive to Nimbin and Byron Bay. You can stay in hotels and Hostels but there are also some very good B&Bs where you can stay in local homes which is good for finding out about what to do and see in the area.
James recommends driving back to Sydney via the Coast Road with stops along the way so you enjoy the spectacular coastal scenery.
Folks really do need a car to get around in the Byron Bay region as the public transport options did not seem to be that great and there are great local markets in the towns of the hinterland that are well worth visiting.
Below are our curated camera proofs of Nimbin. We've taken the editorial decision to include them in this page because the nature of the types of things sold in Nimbin mean that photography is not encouraged by the locals!
Make sure you don't leave your valuables in your car and stay on the main strip where you can enjoy the many markets selling local produce, clothing and tourist items.
The landscapes of the hinterland really are worth seeing. From farmland to bush with huge imposing rocky outcrops that if you smoke enough greenery they can begin to look like melted buildings from a previous civilisation.
In 2003 the greenery was natural and cheap compared to Sydney prices which was much better than the modern cultivation practices in which the pants seem to be soaked in terrible "poisons" to make them grow fast that result in anything but a mellow experience.
There are plenty of very good cafes so you can drive from Lismore in the morning, have lunch in Nimbin and then arrive in Byron Bay for the sunset at the lighthouse, which is a sight that shouldn't be missed.
