In the tradition of postmodernism, “artistic conventions have once again allowed, and encouraged, intentional, self conscious, borrowing.” (Pultz, 1995, p.154) This collection of images borrows the theoretical perspective of “triangulation, a social science research method that advocates the use of multiple methods,” (Jick, 1979, p. 602), thus metaphor and metonym have been used to transform individual photographs into a narrative structure.
This structure acts to create a metaphor, that human activity on this planet is like an environmental colonization and the images are both metaphor and metonym in that “one sign is substituted for another and one sign is associated with another.”(Eagleton, 1983, p. 99)
A definition of these terms is expressed in the following quote: “Metaphor works by transposing qualities from one plane of reality to another, metonymy works by associating meanings within the same plane... making a part stand for a whole.” (Fiske, 1990, p. 95)
