Newcastle NSW 2003

These #photographs were made in Newcastle, NSW on the 9th of September 2003 and they include architecture and beach landscapes with a photo montage of surfers and hang gliders in action along with people being people.

The Gallery, Above, contains a selection of colour edited images and below are a set of previously unpublished camera proofs for narrative context.

Like Port Macquarie, there was a clear art deco influence on the buildings. Newcastle, however, has or in 2003 had, many Old World Architectural treasures that seemed to be very well maintained.

Newcastle is the large major stop on the Coast road from Byron Bay to Sydney. It's only a couple of hours to Sydney so it's an easy drive on the last leg. There's plenty of things to do and the scenery along the town's shoreline is very picturesque.

As James' friend, Scotty from Sydney proved, Newcastle is also an easy train ride from Sydney but it helps to have a car to get around the city and environs. We've included some of Scotty's photographs for the sake of historical interests sake.

James says he has many fond memories of Newcastle and it was great to have Scotty participate in what was James' first photographic road trip, from Byron Bay to Sydney. Scotty was kind, thoughtful and funny and he demonstrated a good eye for photogenic scenery which added a extra dimension to the journey.

James' next big road trip was in Dierdre's Yellow Scottish Highland Express in 2004 so keep an eye out for those pictures.

Below, Newcastle seemed to have many "Pharaonic" artifacts including Pharaoh's Obelisks, the "we waz here" palm trees that were so fashionable in the post colonial era, and faux-Egyptian artifacts presented as decor!
